About The Isle Of Wight


The Isle of Wight is located just off England's mainland South coast, situated between the busy English Solent and the Channel.


It is known for its mild climate, in fact it is officially rated as the sunniest place in the UK.


It has picture postcard villages, beautiful landscape and stunning coastal scenery. Slightly more than half of the Island is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.


It is the second most populous Island in England, and is home to 140,000 inhabitants. It has 489 miles (787 km) of roadway, but amazingly, no motorways!


It has a illustrious maritime and industrial tradition, including boat-building, sail-making, the manufacture of hovercrafts, and Britain's space rockets.


The town of Cowes is a world famous centre for sailing, hosting several racing regattas. Cowes Week is the longest-running regular regatta in the world, with over 1,000 yachts regularly competing each year.


The Isle of Wight is said to be the most haunted island in the world, with an assortment of spectres spotted.


Great for ramblers and cyclists, the Isle of Wight is a regular feature in the “Top 10 routes in the world”, due to its varied terrains.


It is the Dinosaur Fossil Capital of Great Britain, with many archaeological treasures discovered.


Most people will know the Island for its music festival, The Isle Of Wight Festival was originally held from 1968 to 1970. The event was revived in 2002, and still takes place annually.


The Island is one of the few places in England that still has native red squirrels, seals and dolphins are regularly spotted on the coast.


The Isle Of Wight was also once home to Queen Victoria, her home still stands today, named Osborne House.
